I Had No Idea There Was a  Campground There!
No surprise, given that existing camping directories are so incomplete and poorly mapped.

On this site, we are building the most complete US public campground directory in existence  (Federal, State and local; not privately owned).  We include only car-camping campgrounds with 5 or more campsites (not walk/hike-in, boat-in, horse camps or group camps).

This website makes maximum use of the latest interactive mapping and gps technology.  Some states are done now (we plan to have them all by Spring of 2009) and you can get an idea of how it works.

Your input is invited to help us make it more accurate and useful. Send us new campgrounds or corrections.  Come back and visit us often, as we will be adding new states and features regularly.

RESERVATIONS
Many public campgrounds do not accept reservations.  We do not have specific information about which campgrounds do or do not.  For reservation information:

  • FEDERAL - Reservations for Federal campgrounds (NP, NF, BLM, TVA, COE) may be made through www.recreation.gov . Phone 1-877-444-6777
  • STATE - Each state page has a web site and phone number for state campground reservations. (SP, SF, WMA)
  • CITY OR COUNTY (CP)  - Use the phone numbers in the listings

Yes, there are lots of campground directories already, so why a new one?  We have been camping for 35 years and have used them all.  The existing ones either:
  • Include some but not others (for example; they may include National Forest and National Park sites but no State or local sites)
  • Include only campgrounds with reservations (many excellent Federal and State campgrounds have no reservations)
  • Have poor maps or just a "nearest town" locator system.

This guide is NOT intended to replace all of these but to use the latest technology to provide a really useful map-based index into all of them.

Some things they have that we don't have are:

  • Directions (For each campground we have latitude and longitude.  We link to GOOGLE MAPS for excellent road directions and you can use your GPS for directions when you are on-the-road.)
  • Details about facilities at the campground (For each campgound we provide links to web sites that have all the details. We also provide a phone number so you can use your cell phone to get details when you are on the road.)
  • A book you can take on the road (You have to print your own - see PRINTING on the State pages.)
  • Reservations (See information to the left)
